Triumphant Takeoff: Global Airlines 2nd Commercial Flight. Manchester to New York JFK

On a bright spring morning at Manchester Airport, I had the chance to step aboard something truly rare – a flight that may never happen again. This was Global Airlines’ second-ever commercial service, operating a one-off Manchester to New York JFK rotation aboard their Airbus A380.
As someone who follows the aviation industry closely, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to fly on this much-anticipated launch, especially given Global’s bold ambition to bring new life to the superjumbo.
And while the airline is still ironing out a few details, this flight was a genuinely impressive showcase of what Global can deliver—especially for a start-up.

A380 Glamour… With a Grounded Twist

There’s something undeniably special about boarding an Airbus A380, especially one that’s just been brought back to life. Global’s aircraft—formerly operated by China Southern Airlines—still turns heads on the tarmac, and as we were bussed out to the remote stand at Manchester and boarded via air-stairs, the scale of the aircraft made for a striking sight.

Boarding via stairs might not appear glamorous, but it certainly added to the sense of occasion. This was clearly not a typical day at Manchester Airport.

From Economy to Business Class: A Welcome Surprise

Originally ticketed in Economy, I was upgraded to Business Class at the gate, offering the chance to review the cabin comfort and service from a premium perspective.
Global’s A380 cabin still bears structural hallmarks of its former operator, but the airline has done well to make the space feel fresh and welcoming.

The Business Class seat was fully lie-flat with ample room and a large screen—though, as I would soon discover, the IFE wasn’t functioning on this flight. Whether due to licensing issues or the challenges of reconfiguring an ex-China Southern aircraft in time, the system was inoperable throughout the flight. Global had however, implemented ‘the Global Times’ an online IFE offering that was available through your laptop, tablet or phone.
Still, for a one-off service, it’s forgivable—and passengers seemed generally understanding.

Culinary Offering: Classic British Comfort

One of the highlights of the flight was the in-flight dining experience. For the main meal service, passengers in Business Class were served:
• Caprese salad to start
• Chicken ballotine with crushed garlic potatoes for the main course
• A lemon and lavender meringue tart for dessert
The food was beautifully presented and full of flavour – far better than one might expect from a brand-new airline still building its service routines.

Before landing, a traditional British afternoon tea was served, complete with:
• A selection of sandwiches
• A warm scone with jam and clotted cream
• A generous slice of Battenberg cake
• And, of course, a pot of hot tea

It was a charming, thoughtful service touch—and a strong reminder of Global’s British identity.

Cabin & Crew: Enthusiasm in the Air Heading

What stood out most on this flight wasn’t the aircraft or even the food – it was the crew.
Enthusiastic, friendly, and genuinely proud to be part of the journey, the team onboard brought a sense of warmth and professionalism that’s often missing on more seasoned airlines. Despite the teething issues with the IFE, the crew remained attentive and communicative throughout, constantly offering drink top-ups, snacks and more.

Amenties: An English x Italian Collaboration

The amenity kit offered onboard was a standout feature, presented in a sleek BRIC’S Milano- leather branded pouch a touch of luxury that immediately set the tone. Inside, passengers found a Global Airlines-branded eye mask, soft black socks, a dental kit, earplugs, and a small Global- branded pen – compact yet considered.
Adding a layer of refinement, the crew later distributed additional amenities from Murdock Barbers of London, including a Black Tea cologne and Black Tea body wash, bringing a subtle, sophisticated fragrance to the in-flight experience.
It was a thoughtfully curated selection that blended functionality with elevated British grooming.

Sitting down with CEO, James Asquith:

Q: Such an awesome journey James, I guess the first question is “How are you feeling?”

A: Yeah, I don’t know is the honest answer. There is a lot of emotions. It’s been a lot of progression from we’d never be here to now we are here, and a lot of narrative changes to what comes next and what we can improve on which we know.
But there’s a lot of emotions, can I swear? People have worked their ARSES off. People have put their heart and soul into this. Just putting this plane in the sky safely and reliably is just massive in itself. It’s a journey to get to the next bit, I don’t know, there’s been a lot of questions over the past few years living under the
microscope of what we’re trying to do.

Global Airlines

Final Thoughts: A Glimpse at What Could Be

This wasn’t just any transatlantic hop – it was a moment in aviation history. Global Airlines’ second-ever flight, aboard an A380 that was never supposed to fly again, operating a route that may never repeat. That sense of uniqueness was felt by everyone onboard, from the crew to the passengers.

While there’s no current confirmation of ongoing scheduled services, Global Airlines has hinted that its focus may now shift toward ACMI (wet lease) operations, potentially putting its aircraft and expertise to work for other carriers.

Whatever the future holds, this one-off flight was a bold and confident statement: Global Airlines is here, and it’s serious.
