Starting point: Maastricht, where culture meets charm
Begin your journey in Maastricht, the oldest city in the Netherlands and the unofficial capital of the Burgundian lifestyle.
Think cobbled streets, elegant squares like Vrijthof, a maze of medieval alleyways and the calm flow of the Meuse River. Visit the Basilica of Saint Servatius, stroll through the romantic Jekerkwartier and don’t forget to stop at Boekhandel Dominicanen, a bookstore set inside a 13th-century church.

On the road: the Mergelland route
The Mergelland route is a roughly 110 kilometer scenic drive through the lush, undulating countryside of Zuid-Limburg. Unlike the flat landscapes of the Randstad, here you’ll find wide hills, winding roads and jaw-dropping viewpoints that will make you stop more often than you expected.

• Vijlen, nicknamed “the only mountain village in the Netherlands”, sits at the country’s highest point at 322 meters and offers stunning panoramic views.
• Slenaken, a hidden gem nestled in the Gulp Valley, is quiet, green and wonderfully romantic.
• Gulpen, famous for its local brewery Gulpener, is a great spot to rest and recharge.
• Mechelen, surrounded by flower fields and walking paths, invites you to slow down and breathe in the countryside.
