Thailand, Laos & Vietnam: Three Southeast Asian Countries In Two Weeks
For many years, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam have been on countless travelers’ bucket lists, and for good reason. The combination of culture, food, nature, and history makes these countries both exotic and fascinating.
To some, two weeks may sound rushed, but if you’re short on time and still want to explore as many places as possible, without sacrificing enjoyment, this itinerary could be perfect for you.
No matter where you’re coming from, Bangkok is the best place to start. It’s well-connected to international flights and is a great city to ease into the Southeast Asian atmosphere.
Bangkok to Luang Prabang:
Must-See Sights in Limited Time
For first-timers in Bangkok, the Grand Palace and Wat Pho are must-sees. But if you’ve visited before, consider taking a boat shuttle to ICONSIAM at night and hunting for delicious local food for dinner. A day trip to Ayutthaya is highly recommended, and ending your day with dinner overlooking the lit-up Wat Arun is a true delight.
For families, Dream World is a solid choice, offering thrilling rides, a small zoo, and even indoor snow attractions. Not a theme park fan? You might prefer a relaxing day or temple-hopping instead.
If you have extra days, consider adding Pattaya or Koh Samui to your itinerary. Otherwise, it’s time to head to your next country, Laos. Fly to Luang Prabang and spend the evening exploring the night market and savoring Laotian cuisine at Manda de Laos.
On your final morning in Luang Prabang, hike Phousi Hill for sunrise. It’s best done early to enjoy the cooler weather and smaller crowds, as most visitors go at sunset. After lunch, take the high-speed train to Vang Vieng (book tickets at least three days in advance) and enjoy cruising down the Nam Xong River.
Must-Do Activities in Laos
Day 1: Balloons, Caves & Viewpoints
• If you love hot air balloons, Above Laos offers rides at a fraction of the price you’d pay in Cappadocia.
• Ban Pha Tang is a quiet riverside spot ideal for a picnic and drone footage of majestic limestone cliffs.
• Visit Tham Chang Cave, relax at Blue Lagoon 2, and if you’re up for it, hike to Nam Xay Viewpoint.
Day 2: Culture, Lunch & Onward to Vietnam
The next morning, take the train—or book a private van if you’re with family—for a comfortable trip to Vientiane via the new highway. Visit Pha That Luang and the Patuxay Monument, then have lunch at Kualao Restaurant before heading to the airport for your flight to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam.
After a long day, it’s best to rest upon arrival.
Day 3: Cruise the Mekong & Dine Like a Local
The next day, take a trip to the Mekong Delta to enjoy a boat ride, witness everyday life in My Tho, and visit the Vinh Trang Pagoda. For dinner, Ngon Restaurant is a popular choice—it’s often crowded, but worth it.
✓ Don’t miss the Cu Chi Tunnels and a Saigon River Cruise, which you can pair with a short stroll around the Opera House and a great cup of Vietnamese coffee at Trung Nguyen.
If you have more time, consider extending your trip to Phu Quoc for at least four days or drive south to the seaside town of Vung Tau.
